Caller to NCC: ‘Get rid of my neighbour’ Jacob Chandler “Help me evict my neighbour, I don’t like them.” That’s one of the many weird requests put to Nelson City Council call centre staff over the past year. Each month, the council receives an average of 4600 calls and 900 emails from local residents. As expected there are plenty of building consent enquiries, questions about permits and people making noise complaints. Along with the usual requests come some very strange ones too. “I had one lady wanting us to remove a dead mouse from her compost heap as the council should be responsible for mice,” says a council call centre staff member. Others have included a lady wanting the council to clean her garden because it had been flooded and got a bit muddy, while one man phoned the council to find out if they had a register for dead cats found on the side of the road.

“Sadly, this gentleman’s cat was missing,” says the staffer who took the call. Just last week, the council had a call from a man wanting to know why someone was dumping rubbish in his rubbish bin and one staffer had a call asking what the quickest way to get a divorce was. The council’s communications manager Paul Shattock says the council also receive various emails meant for Nelson in Canada, a city home to around 10,000 people.

Free bread popular with Victory families Kate Russell Short-dated supermarket bread is being offered to families in need at the Victory Community Centre, and it’s proving to be a very popular initiative. Rob Brown, programme and facilities coordinator at the centre, says the bread, which is supplied by Fresh Choice Nelson, is being offered every weekday. It is collected by either himself or another staff member on their way to centre each morning.

“We get a range of bread including budget white or wholemeal loaves, as well as garlic bread, foccacia, soup rolls and speciality breads. We put it out front of the centre at around 8.30am weekdays, and by 9am it is usually all gone,” he says. Families are allowed to take up to two loaves a day. “It always goes quicker during the school term - people tend to pick up a loaf after they have dropped their kids at school, and we tend to get regulars coming every day,” he says.

He says the local families are very appreciative. “I’ve had comments from a family who can’t afford bread, saying that they really appreciate it – this effectively is their food for the week,” he says. “Families are also able to use our kitchen and use our toaster, butter and spreads if they need to.” The centre also gets fruit, vegetables and assorted household items donated to them for distribution in the community from time to time, and Rob says they are always happy to distribute food.

A group of local fishermen had to really fight for their fish over the weekend as a porbeagle shark tried to steal their catch off the hook. Troy Dando was on board when a very cheeky shark had a crack at one of their fish they had on a line. “It then bit the motor on the boat, then

worked its way alongside the boat, biting it as it went,” he says. Porbeagle sharks are similar in appearance to mako sharks and grow to around 2.5m long. For video on this story, visit

Some Nelson businesses are being recognised on a national level with awards and nominations being taken out left, right and centre. TM Covers have taken out the two top awards at the Outdoor Fabric Product Association awards ceremony in Melbourne. Managing director Christine Clark says she was “pretty thrilled” to receive both the top residential and commercial award. She will now have a chance to compete in the American awards, where she believes the company may have a good chance at taking out some more awards. A number of other local businesses are up for awards as part of the New Zealand Top Shop awards.

Living light is one of seven Nelson retailers to have made it into the regional finals, along with KILT, Aboki, Silvermoon, Cruiseabout, Spark Richmond and Vodafone Motueka. “I was absolutely delighted, I was blown away. You never quite know how it’s going to go when you enter these types

of awards,” Living Light store manager Jude Biggs says. “The rest of the team were over the moon. Cynthia Baur, our owner and director, was simply delighted, she was really wrapped.” Jude says initially there was a lot of paperwork to fill out about the team, the products and customer service. “There is a panel of four judges who look at a secret shopper report as well as the information you have submitted and they make their decision from there.” The awards will be held in Christchurch in early September and Jude says she is feeling hopeful. “We work really hard with customer service and product knowledge.”

It’s a good time to be selling a home, say the region’s real estate agents, with houses being snapped up within days. Agents say the low number of homes on the marker is normal for this time of year but buyer demand hasn’t dropped from the summer months and that’s creating hot demand at open homes. One Nelson couple had only just finished unpacking their belongings in their new Atawhai home when an agent knocked on the door, saying he had a buyer for their home if they wanted to sell. Marc Evans says he only took possession of his home three weeks ago. “We had just moved in and I was out in the garden getting it into shape, when I saw a couple walk past with a real estate agent. They got in their car and the agent came over and said, “that couple liked your house. They’re from Auckland and are cash buyers.” I said “I’m not looking to sell, we’re still unpacking.” Mike Pero Real Estate’s Mitchell Wilson says just last week they had five offers on one

There are still a lot of buyers out there, what we tend to find is that a lot of Nelsonians tend to wait until the spring, but right now there’s less competition.” There have been reports of agents knocking on doors, asking people if they’d like to sell. One homeowner in Victory said she had four agents knock on her door within a fortnight. Mitchell says it’s normal for agents to drop flyers and knock on doors year round, but the lack of properties means there may be more than normal. Ben Nalder of Summit Real Estate says, as the number of properties for sale drops agents get more proactive in trying to get listings.

Councillors to discuss Trafalgar Centre stability: Investigations into the stability of the Trafalgar Centre, and the ground below it, will be presented to councillors at an extraordinary meeting on Thursday. Engineering firm ARUP was commissioned by Nelson City Council to carry out additional testing on the stability of the ground and the building, supplementing initial research conducted by Tonkin & Taylor. Kate Russell What do 86 households in Nelson all have a common? They all own a dog called Bella, which has come out as the most popular dog name in the current Nelson City Council dog register. Molly, Max, Poppy, and Ruby follow close beind, completing the top five line-up. Among the list of 5455 pooches, food names appear to be popular, with Mango, Toast, Muffin, Sushi, Peanut and Honey all making appearances. Some have chosen to name their dogs after cars, such as Mazda, Porche and Chevy, while flower names are also proving to be popular, with Poppy, Jasmine, Daisy, Marigold, Violet, and Rose all making the list. Interestingly, 1433 dogs in Nelson can claim to be ‘one of a kind,’ and it is these canines that own title to some of the more ‘unique’ names on the register. Tasman District Council dog control administration officer Ross Connachie says not all owners give their dogs conventional names. A glance down the list of this year’s registrations suggests some of the owners have gone barking mad, giving their dogs names like Stinky the Stoat, Richie McPaw and Didymo. Dog registration officially closed on June 30.

One of Mapua’s and Nelson’s favourite cafes, Hamish’s Icecream Parlour and Cafe, is closing after its lease was terminated, with owner Adele Calteaux saying they can’t afford to move into new premises. Hamish’s, which is named after Mapua’s famous resident heron which visited the wharf each winter for more than 20 years, will be closing on July 24. Adele says she did not want to close after running the popular cafe for nine years, but insists she has no alternative. Adele says the Tasman District Council purchased the building on the Mapua Wharf in December 2013 and now it is going to be leased entirely to another existing tenant, Golden Bear Brewing Company. Although council offered to relocate Hamish’s to the new commercial premises being constructed on the former Mapua Aquarium site, Adele says they can’t afford to move into the new building. “We were going to move into the new building, but when we looked at the conditions of the lease we realised we couldn’t afford it. It was going cost us $60,000 to $80,000 to refit the new building - we are only a small business, we can’t afford that.” Adele says the new lease also required the tenant to open at

If we moved into the new building we’d have to open and we’d lose money,” she says. Adele says she is also disappointed at the handling of the process which she says “was not transparent”. She also says she can’t understand why Golden Bear Brewing is staying in the building when she is being forced out. “The council said they would look after us but I didn’t realise, perhaps a bit naively, that moving would be at my expense. I’m annoyed and

gutted that it has come to this.” Council commercial manger Gene Cooper says they had to relocate Hamish’s because of “legacy issues” with the lease that council “could not unwind”. He says the council “was not part of the problem” and has subsequently tried “wherever possible” to help Adele keep Hamish’s open. He says council purchased the building to get parties back together, but all they could achieve was to let Adele stay another five years or move when another building became available on Mapua Wharf. Gene says council “went beyond the call of a commercial landlord to provide Hamish’s with a financial solution” that included reduced rental to help them move into the new building.

School holidays serve up plenty of options Nelson kids are being spoilt for choice this winter break, as a number of events around the region kick off the second week of holiday fun. School holiday programmes in particular are proving popular, with enrolment numbers more than doubling in the past three years. Tom Dasler, supervisor at the YIKES holiday programme in Nelson, says that they have been busier than ever. “When I first started working here three years ago we had around 20 kids, and now we’re pushing up to 50.” YIKES run their holiday programme from three locations – Nelson Central School, Auckland Point School, and Victory Primary School. Tania O’Meagher, who is the coordinator for the YIKES holiday programmes, says she is really surprised at how much demand there is for holiday programmes in Nelson. “When I was a parent I only used them here and there. Parents seem to be working longer hours now so we’re just as important as their school life now, and that surprises me,” she says. Holiday programmes are now also being offered for preschoolers, with the Nelson Tasman Kindergarten Association offering care for three to five years olds at three of their kindys

Thursday morning saw the opening of Dinosaur Footprints – A Story of Discovery, a free exhibition which features three dinosaur footprints discovered in northwest Nelson. Kids can see real dinosaur bones, large scale dinosaur models and artworks. Parents Marcella Collins and Sarah McGregor, who were at the opening day

of the exhibition with their children, say they are finding lots to do with their kids these school holidays. “There are lots of options,” says Marcella. “We’ve just been to the movies, and we’re also going to check out the free stuff at Richmond Mall.” Down at Founders Heritage Park, kids can get their ‘Nautical know-how’ on and enjoy free, nautical-themed games and activities. SLAVES TO RHYTHM: Madeline Wilson, Brook Silke-Atkins, Lily McIntosh, Lily Warner and Fiona Saunders, preparing for the Wakatu Dance Company's upcoming performance, Slave to the Rhythm. Choreographer Peta Spooner says the idea behind the show is that it is the Rhythm of the music that makes you want to get up and dance. Richmond Mall brings in parking wardens Andrew Board Richmond Mall will introduce parking wardens next month in an effort to stop people leaving their cars there all day. Mall manager Belinda de Clercq says a recent investigation found up to 40 per cent of the vehicles in the mall car park each day were there for the entire work day. She says those “abusing” the free parks were either retail workers in the mall, retail workers on Richmond’s Queen Street or people parking their cars at the mall and catching the bus or carpooling to work in Nelson city. She says the high number of people parking there all day has forced the mall to introduce parking wardens, which will fine people $65 for going over the increased three hour time limit. The company employed is national car parking firm Wilsons. Belinda says there will be flexibility for shoppers who need to use a park for longer, with an online system able to give them extra time. The enforcement programme will be introduced in two stages, the first on August 4 will simply mean a warning ticket for people parking over the two hour limit. From August 11 the full enforcement will begin. There are 770 car parks in the mall and 1300 public parks in the Richmond CBD, and Belinda says the new enforcement could cause problems for the town’s residential carparks.

Nelsonians are being encouraged to say no to plastic in July, as part of a global campaign that aims to raise awareness of the amount of single-use plastic being consumed. Plastic Free July involves individuals, schools, businesses and community groups taking part in a ‘top four’ challenge during the month, which involves avoiding plastic bags, water bottles, takeaway coffee cup lids, and straws. Nelson Environment Centre’s waste minimisation manager, Karen Driver, says the initiative is a good way of getting people to think about the amount of plastic they are consuming. “It’s all about raising awareness,” she says. “We promote reducing waste every day, and even if people refuse plastic bags, or takeaway coffee cup lids for just one day, it’s helping. Maybe it means they’ll think about it next time they are ordering a takeaway coffee.” Rylee Petterrson, who is the co-founder of Nelson eco company The Green Collective, says that single-use plastics are the most important thing to avoid, but it can be hard to do because they are

Couple retires from helping the world

Earlier this year, and just a 150 kilometres east of ISIS-held land in northern Iraq, Nelson’s Pauline and Bruce Coffey were handing out gumboots, blankets and food, completely unfazed about close proximity of the world’s most feared terrorist organisation. After all, it was hardly their first time in an unsecure foreign land. Bruce and Pauline have spent most of the past 15 years working in war zones, drought-stricken land and cities cleaning up from major earthquakes. Earlier this year, they were in northern Iraq working with a British charity and helping to look after hundreds of families with food, healthcare and housing. Bruce says it is a hard, but rewarding, job and their latest trip to Iraq was their last. “It’s time to�� stop running around, we have �� children and grandchildren here in Nelson who we want to spend time with.” Pauline is a registered nurse and Bruce has a background as a school teacher, Navy officer and �� N�� before �� prison officer, they both �� joined the Salvation Army in the �� early 2000s. That’s really nice to see that.” Bruce says you have to be realistic about what you can and can’t do. “You’re not going there to change the world because there is so much more need than you can ever address. If you ever worry about how much you can’t do, you’re going to do your head in. “I was doing a food delivery with 12 trucks loaded to the hilt in Africa and this little old lady who was stick-thin asked for some food, and I had to turn her away. We were feeding children and if I gave it to her, the world food programme that we had the contract with would have had something to say,” he says. “We did manage to spill a bit for her though, but it was degrading watching her fighting the goats off for the food that was on the ground.” The Coffeys are now settling back into their Stoke home and preparing for plenty of family time after a hectic decade and a half. “We’re Christians and we believe that’s what we’ve been called to do, and it’s been nice to be able to help people,” says Bruce.

Stoke Methodist Church 94 Neale Ave, Stoke, Nelson

When one door closes another door opens. It’s a well used saying and almost always true, especially for Stoke Methodist Church. Around two and a half years ago, after the Christchurch earthquake, all of the building codes were reassessed. Stoke Methodist Church’s buildings received an engineering report and all failed to pass the new seismic standards, “even though they’re basically as strong as the day they were put here fifty years ago,” says congregation member Keith Drogemuller. The land the church sat on was 5000 square metres and ac-

commodated the parsonage, the church, five flats and a complex of a hall, kitchen, lounge and three Sunday school classrooms. Forced out of their church, the congregation decided to convert the Sunday school rooms into a new Church and used their assets to fund the project. This has included subdividing the church land into four parts, then selling the old church and the parsonage. Eighteen months later and the church is proud to welcome the congregation and community back into a new and improved facility. Apart from being well up to near the new earthquake standards, the building also provides people with a much warmer environment thanks to heat pumps and insulation, is a better size for the congregation and is more suited to its modern day requirements. Preparing for Blessing of the Fleet The 15th Blessing of Nelson’s Fishing Fleet is scheduled for this Saturday, paying its annual tribute to those who have lost their lives at sea, along with the blessing of fishing vessels in the lead up to the hoki season. There will be the usual fireworks on Friday night, with viewing from the waterfront and the port hills. Flares and fireworks will be set off from

6.30pm. On Saturday Nelson City Brass will play from noon at the Seafarers’ Memorial, while the fishing boats line up along Wakefield Quay. The blessing ceremony will begin at 12.30pm. Music will be provided by the Nelson Male Voice Choir, the Nelson Christian Academy and lone piper Perry Smith. Pigeons will be released at the end of the service.

New mural for children's library The children’s library at Nelson Public Library has two new murals brightening up what used to be an eyesore, thanks to a project involving a dozen individuals, companies and groups. The murals were painted by Nelson artist Monique Richards, commissioned by Matt Lawrey, and unveiled at a packed launch at the library on Saturday afternoon. The artworks feature jungle scenes inhabited by exotic wildlife including lizards, monkeys and snakes, along with characters from popular culture including, amongst others, Kermit the Frog, R2D2, Harry Potter and Wally.

In a novel twist, the murals, which are painted onto large panels, are fixed to the side of The Car Company’s workshop, a building owned by Wakatu Incorporation, and are only visible through windows in the children’s library. Before the murals went up, the windows looked out to an ugly concrete block wall. The joint effort started over a coffee in December last year and Matt, who managed the project, says he is thrilled with the way so many different people and groups have supported the murals. “Amazingly, everyone I approached got behind the project,” he said.

The money came from Friends of the Nelson Library Inc, Nelson Public Library and Creative NZ’s Creative Communities Scheme through Arts Council Nelson. Resene provided the paint, the materials were donated by Cutting Edge Signs + Graphics, Wakatu Incorporation paid for the murals to be erected and their tenant, The Car Company, gave consent. Waimea College then came to the party letting Monique work in their art department and Nelson City Council paid for the plaque explaining how the artworks came to be. Matt says he hopes the murals put smiles on children’s faces for years to come.

Marist, Waimea bundled out of club rugby finals andrew Board The region will have a new senior club rugby champion this Saturday after two-time defending champions Waimea Old Boys were knocked out in the semi-finals over the weekend. Star & Garter Waimea were favourites to breeze past fourthplaced qualifier Kahurangi at Jubilee Park last Saturday, but the men from Motueka and Riwaka sprang a surprise on the whole competition, beating Waimea 20-19 and advancing to this weekend’s final at Trafalgar Park. There they’ll meet Tasman Trophy champions Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers, after they beat Wakatu Hotel Marist in Brightwater in the second semi-final on Saturday. Wanderers were clear favourites for the game and proved too strong for Marist, winning the game 31-13. For Nelson rugby fans, that means another year of the title heading to a “country” team. In the division two semi-finals, Waimea Old Boys beat Takaka 38-22 and Wanderers toppled Collingwood 22-0, setting up a repeat of last year’s final, which Wanderers won in extra time.

Waimea had bragging rights going into the game as they had came out on top on each of the previous outings this season however Nelson’s game plan came into fruition which required everyone to work together. The plan created turn-over ball, which was treasured and the shooters finished it off by putting the ball through the hoop to win 34-24. Coach Lyn Fleming said she was extremely pleased with her charges as they “put it altogether” throughout the tournament. The girls played much better than they have been playing in the local competition, and the “tweaking” of combinations paid dividends. The girls are versatile and can play more than one position which meant that there was not a problem in adhering to the recommended one and half games per day per

player. They did not appear to have any difficulty in adjusting to playing outside considering their club netball is played indoors at Saxton Stadium. Goal defence Jaime Archer was “talent identified” on the back of some strong performances. She came together nicely with Alex Whitford to establish a formidable defensive partnership. Alex was the surprise package, as she went from strength to strength as she stepped up against the tougher opposition. The shooters returned commendable statistics of around 82-85 per cent, with the ever-reliable Lydia Swaney at goal attack who just goes out and gets the job done. She is the total package as she takes more than her fair share of centre passes. Goal shoots Tia Van Diepan and Lauren Chaney also came in for praise.

Nelson College for Girls had an extremely successful outing at the South Island Secondary Schools Junior Development Tournament held in Christchurch last week. NCG 9A team finish fourth at the tournament with NCG 10A finishing fifth. Three games on the first two days is relatively hard going however with the correct build up and fitness levels the girls were still going strong by the end of the day two. The Year 10 draw had been seeded for the first time and Nelson 10A opened their account with a convincing 35-13 win over Marlborough Girls College. Christchurch Girls could be considered Nelson’s “boogie” team, as they certainly did not play to their potential and were punished 18-29, however they bounced back with a commanding 45-20 victory over South Otago. Day two saw Nelson recording a 30-28 win over Southland Girls, and a strong performance was rewarded with a 45-29 over St Hilda’s Collegiate. It was possibly a solitary minute’s lapse in play in the fourth quarter against Marian College which cost Nelson a top four finish. Just a couple of critical moments which resulted in turnover ball and unforced errors meant Nelson were on the wrong side of the ledger (26-28) at the final whistle. Another strong performance against Roncalli College 36-17 meant Nelson faced Waimea 10A in the play off for

NelsoN Rugby Football It’s another season over for the country’s oldest rugby club but it won’t be one the senior teams will want to see too much written about for the history books. Galbraith Nelson’s division one side’s highlight of the season came in its last game of the season. A 28-26 win over Waimea Old Boys meant the Noel Barton Trophy will spend the summer inside the Nelson clubrooms. Before that it had been a tough season for the boys

in blue, but coach Kade Heke is confident that many of the young players blooded this year will be back next year. “We were so close in so many games, and it’s disappointing that we didn’t put ourselves in a position to push for a place in the semi, but hopefully we’ll have most of our young guys returning next year.” Nelson's young team played most of its season without its superstars David Havilli, Mitchell Scott and Shane Christie. In the second division competition Nelson had a solid year, improving on last year’s effort but falling just short of a place in the semi-finals. Coach Chris Pugh says it was a good year for his squad. “We had a really good season, we were really happy. We didn’t quite meet our goals of reaching the top four, but I think the whole set up we had going this year will stand us in good stead next year.”

Club Chris says he will be returning as division two coach next year and is confident they’ll see an improvement on this season. “We’re a strong club with a lot of history and we don’t like not winning. So we’ll be back stronger next year. We’ve introduced some really good young guys this year.

"For a lot of those young boys it was a huge learning curve for them,” he says. Although senior rugby is over for the season, the club's junior members still have plenty of rugby to go. The club's JAB teams play until August 22, with the age-grade finals to be played on August 29.

Top of the South gymnastics competition tries new venue

Gymnastics Nelson hosted the Top of the South Gymnastics Competition from their new venue of Saxton Stadium last weekend. Teams from around the country came to Nelson for the event, which acted as a qualifier for the national competition to be held in Auckland at the beginning of October. Around 300 competitors from clubs including Dunedin, Wellington, Blenheim, Timaru, Waimate and Christchurch competed in both the competitive gymnast grade, which
